Spring 2013 Highlights

SLIS-S 513 ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATICS

Fall 2012 Highlights

SLIS-S 604 ADVANCED PHP

I teamed up with other students to create an application "What's up @ IU" It has a secure front end that only allows IU staff/students to add events to the map and users without IU credentials can view event details.

Summer 2012 Highlights

SLIS-S 523 SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

I teamed up with other students to publish an article about Google Scholar in Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship.Gray, J. E., Hamilton, M. C., Hauser, A., Janz, M. M., Peters, J. P., & Taggart, F. (2012). Scholarish: Google Scholar and its value to the sciences. Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, 70. DOI:10.5062/F4MK69T9.

Spring 2012 Highlights

SLIS-S 637 INFORMATION VISUALIZATION

I teamed up with a Telecommunications graduate student and another SLIS student to create a map (visualization) of the media@iu site. The original tabular site can be found here. The final interactive visualization can be found here.

SLIS-S 515 CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

Fall 2011 Highlights

1st place in IUSA sustainable computing case competition
I teamed up with a Computer science PhD. Student (Paul Rohwer) to enter a sustainable computing case competition held by the IUSA (IU Student Association). We mapped the "walkable" campus and created walking routes for the IU Bloomington Campus. We then created a network of walkable routes enabling us to perform routing, directions, and walking travel times for pedestrians on campus. The network layer is hosted as an online service allowing the service and data to be consumed in various applications. The IU Mobile team is currently integrating it into their products to enable walking directions from building to building, walking tours, etc. An IDS article on the competition can be found here. Our presentation can be found here. Demonstrations of early prototypes are also available here.

SLIS-S 515 INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

SLIS-S 556 SYSTEMS ANALYSIS & DESIGN

Summer Session 2011 Highlights

I completed 9 graduate hours this summer session. That is technically a full time student.

Here are a few of my completed projects:

SLIS-S 603 PYTHON

SLIS-S 603 PHP

PHP Secure Mapping Application This project uses a Postgres database and PHP to store username, password, and location information. All of the users can be located on the map. The map uses client side ArcGIS javascript API for mapping locations from passed PHP values. I might pick the project up again soon. Very cool and the API, PHP, and Postgres are all free to use. A good foundation for a no-cost enterprise GIS system. Username:hsimpson password:doh

SLIS-S 511 DATABASE DESIGN

SLIS-S 603 AGENT BASED MODELING

Agent Analyst ArcGIS Extension Modeling Complex modeling of "Agents" based on input parameters. I used the new Indiana House districts that came out of the redistricting based on 2010 census data. An accompanying paper can be found here.

SLIS-S 603 FLASH

Map Blast: This is the first in a series of interactive educational puzzles I have been creating for young Geography students. My sons love these games and being able to "blow-up and explode" the maps.

Spring Session 2011 Highlights

SLIS-S 516 HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

Fall 2010 Highlights

IU Building Locator App for Android I built this app soon after becoming an IU employee and Student to orient myself with campus. In the spirit of Android, I offer it free from the Android Market. Check out the details here. Approximately 5000 people have installed it on their phone.
